
ANALYSIS OF FLANGES USING NONLINEAR GAP
ELEMENT
An Axisymmetric Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed for
flanges, lap joints and gaskets under initial bolt up torque,
thermal loads and internal pressure. In this analysis the existing
stress level and displacement of lap joints, flanges and gaskets
were analyzed to study the leakage at the gaskets. Some appropriate
guidelines and modifications were implemented to reduce the lap
joint and flange rotations. The resulting stresses were significantly
reduced.
